How to pick out that perfect CTR Ring

If you’ve ever wondered what CTR Rings were all about or what they stood for, or how they got started, this is the history.

The letters CTR, a reference to this phrase  “Choose The Right” , are incorporated into a shield logo designed by Helen Alldredge, a Primary General Board member in the 1960s. In 1970, a church committee headed by Naomi W Randall recommended that the shield be incorporated into official church material. Since then, both the phrase and symbol have been used in religious educational materials for LDS youth of Primary age.  The symbol is also used in LDS Culture by members of all ages, both as a reminder of the motto, as well as an indicator of religious affiliation. The CTR initials, displayed on the shield and in other forms, can be seen mainly on CTR Rings as well other types of Jewelry, Tee Shirts, Bookmarks and Stationery.

A Ring with the letters “CTR” on is often worn by members of the LDS Church as a reminder of the “Choose the Right” motto, and as a symbol of their religious affiliation.

CTR rings were introduced at the same time as the CTR shield in 1970 by Primary general president LaVerne W. Parmley after being recommended by a committee chaired by Naomi W. Randall.  In connection with the children’s Sunday School program, each LDS child in this age group is given an adjustable ring with a green escutcheon bearing the letters “CTR” in silver.

Over the years CTR rings have become popular with both children and adults in the LDS Church. They are now available in a variety of designs in over 30 languages.

When I was eight years old, I received my first CTR Ring.  Right now I’m looking for another CTR Ring to wear all the time.  I’m finding there are now so many styles to choose from.   My oldest daughter loves the baguette CTR Ring and my second oldest daughter loves the Butterfly CTR Band.  Both rings are feminine and eligant but so different, just like my daughters.  Any LDS Online Store has a wide variety of these rings to offer.

To the Rescue- The Biography of Thomas S. Monson

Deseret Book publishing has released the new LDS Book, To the Rescue; The Biography of Thomas S. Monson.  LDS Bookstores should now have copies of the book available on September 27th 2010.

President Thomas S. Monson, called as a bishop at age twenty-two and an Apostle at the age of thirty-six, has spent his entire life serving and leading others.  In this offical biography, To the Rescue, you’ll discover accounts you’ve never heard before about the moderrn-day prophet who has “traveled across the globe to minister to a single soul.”  Filled with wonderful photographs and little-knows accounts, this biography is a portrait of a leader completely dedicated to doing whatever the Lord prompts him to do.

To the Rescue chronicles the life and ministry of this extraordinary leader. It is filled with the heartwarming personal accounts so typical of President Monson – some that have become favorites over time and many others that have not been told before. Readers will be transported to his childhood, where he learned his first lessons about reaching out to others. They will glimpse his school experiences, his hobbies (especially his prize Birmingham roller pigeons), his military service in the navy, and his courtship with Frances Johnson, who would become his eternal companion and greatest support.

Most important, readers will observe Thomas S. Monson going “to the rescue” in his more than six decades of devoted Church service. Called as a bishop at age twenty-two, as a counselor in a stake presidency at age twenty-seven, as a mission president at age thirty-one, and as a member of a Quorum of the Twelve Apostles at age thirty-six, he became early on a skilled administrator and a tireless servant of the Lord. He oversaw the work of the Church in East Germany for more than twenty years, beginning with hushed meetings held in automobiles to avoid listening devices and culminating in the dedication of a temple behind the Iron Curtain. He played key roles in landmark programs in the Church, from correlation to welfare to the publication of the LDS editions of the scriptures. And through it all, he recognized people as individuals and ministered to their need in personal ways.

“I testify that each one of us can feel the Lord’s inspiration as we live worthily and strive to serve Him,” President Monson has taught. To the Rescue demonstrates the truth of that teaching, illustrating its power in the life of one remarkable man.

This LDS Book offered in most LDS Bookstores is an inspirational treasure.

2011 Primary Theme Can be Adopted for Families as well.

The 2011 Primary Theme will be “I know the scriptures are true.”  All year long this theme will be used to build an appreciating for the scriptures.  Songs that will be taught will center around this theme in preparation for the Primary Program that us usually given toward the end of the year.  These events will be taken care of by the Primary Presidency and the people called to work in that auxillary, but the theme for the primary can also be used by parents in our homes.

Since faith is built upon knowing the word of the Lord, it is important that our children have an understanding of the scriptures and gain a testimony of their truth.  It is never to early to start reading to a child from the scriptures and explaining to them what makes the words on the pages so important.  It is a perfect opportunity for parents and older siblings to bear their testimonies about the truth of the scriptures.  The Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price hold a wealth of knowledge that enrich the lives of our families.  It is never to early to share this wealth with our children.

When they are old enough, books can be found with scripture stories in them that can be easily read by children.  As soon as a child can read to that level, they should be given the opportunity to read their own scriptures.  But, as soon as a child can read out of a real set of scriptures, he or she should be encouraged to do so, even if it’s only five verses a day.  The words of Christ will touch them.  The examples of the prophets will teach them.

I have a five year old son who wants to grow up to be like Captain Moroni or Nephi.  I can think of no better thing for him to accomplish.  We as parents need to read and testify to our children of the truths therein.  I remember a few of my Primary Teachers and what they taught, but I will never forget my father testifying of his faith in the Savior and his tender feelings toward the Book of Mormon.  You are the most effective teacher your children will ever have.  Let them know as the 2011 Primary theme suggests…”I know the Scriptures are true.”

LDS Women Need Heros Too

There have been many pieces of artwork produced for the LDS Market depicting great men of valor and strength.  One of my favorite subjects is that of the 2000 Stripling Warriors.  Many artists have depicted them and their images have favored many bedroom walls.  A very popular rendition showed three very strong looking men with the captions reading "Stripling Warriors, Mommas Boys".  Young boys have looked to the image of the Stripling Warriors as idea of a young man who stays true and strong when everything around him seems to attack who he is and what he stands for.  Recently, a whole selection of posters has been produced to depict the Stripling Warriors and other heroes.  These other heroes are meant to inspire more than just young men.  The list of subjects include, Nephi, Enos, Samuel the Lamanite, Ammon, Lehi, Abinadi, Captain Moroni, Moroni son of Mormon, The brother of Jared and Stripling Warriors.  This time though added to them are a few women.  The Daughters of Ishmael in the Wilderness being strong through their afflictions.

Ruth of the Old Testiment who stood beside her mother-in-law and Queen Esther who risked her life to save her people,Mary mother of the Savior,Hannah who promised to Lord to give her son to the service of the Lord if she could but have one, Emma Smith walking with her children across the frozen ground, the mother’s of the 2000 Stripling Warriors and a young woman standing with the 2010 Young Women’s Theme.  These eight posters depict these great women of faith and example to all who look.

As an LDS woman, I need role models sometimes that are gender specific.  I know the greatest work on this world I will ever do is the teaching of my children.  I look at Mary, Hannah and the mother’s of the 200 Stripling Warriors for inspiration.  They were just women like me who wanted their children to understand the truth and to know God.  As hard things are asked of me I look to Ruth, Emma Smith, The daughters of Ishmael in the wilderness and Queen Esther.

As I look at the poster of the young girl, I am reminded of my daughters and the example they are to me.  The words beneath the picture are just what they would say to me when I would get discouraged.

"Be Strong and of a Good Courage".  I believe that’s what all of these heroes would say to us.

LDS Temple Artwork

LDS Temples are considered to be the most sacred buildings on the face of the earth by the faithful.  Inside these beautiful buildings families are sealed for eternity.  So they come to represent the eternal nature of love and of the family.  When LDS people come into their temples to make promises of faithful living and receive the blessings of eternal family,  death of loved ones ceases to be the devastating loss it once was.  Because of the Mormon Temple, nothing is lost.  For those of us who have lost a loved one, there can be no greater promise.  So it is no wonder that the image of these lovely buildings are found sculpted, painted, drawn and photographed.

LDS artists have been trying to capture the beauty of the temple since the first one in Kirtland was dedicated in the 1800s.  Since then over one hundred and fifty temples have been built.  Each one has been photographed and painted by numerous members of the church.  Many copies are hanging on the walls of faithful members of the church worldwide.

President Spencer W. Kimball recalled the story of a mother who was saddened because her three sons had left home and gone to sea instead of preparing for further schooling and missions for the Church. You have taught them well." (See Ensign, Dec. 1972, p. 46.) President Kimball then went on to suggest that if parents want their children to marry in the temple, they would do well to hang a picture of the temple in a prominent place in their homes.

Gary E. Stevenson

As you walk through the rooms of your home, do you see uplifting images which include appropriate pictures of the temple and the Savior? Doing such begins the construction of a "spiritual mansion" in which we all may reside regardless of our worldly circumstance—a home filled with treasure that "neither moth nor rust doth corrupt."10 There exists a righteous unity between the temple and the home.

When members of the church were called to leave Nauvoo.  As they walked down Parley Street to cross the Mississippi River they could turn and see the beautiful Nauvoo Temple behind them.  It was the promises they received inside that temple that made their hardships bearable.

I am so grateful for those who have dedicated their time and talent to create such beautiful pictures and art.  It brings a spirit into our home that nothing else can.

LDS Young Women Value Virtue

In 2009, the General Young Women’s Presidency of the LDS Church added the Value of Virtue to the Young Women’s Values.  The color that will represent this value is gold.  Now there will be eight values and eight colors representing all of them.  As a result, you may be seeing some LDS Young Women wearing shirts or peices of LDS jewelry that are multi-colored.  The eight values and their coresponding colors are as follows:

Faith: White

Divine Nature: Blue

Individual Worth: Red

Knowledge: Green

Choice and Accountability: Orange

Good Works: Yellow

Integrity: Purple

Virtue: Gold

The reason in adding the value you virtue was explained by the General Young Women’s President,  Elaine S. Dalton.  She stated:

A Return to Virtue
“Now is the time for a return to virtue!”

The attribute and value of Virtue has been added to the Young Women theme. “Virtue is a pattern of thought and behavior based on high moral standards. It encompasses chastity and moral purity.”

The time has come for the young women of the Church to lead the world in a return to virtue. This is the time to be pure and to qualify for the guidance of the Holy Ghost. In the coming year, it is our desire that all young women and their leaders focus on the meaning of virtue, what young women can do to accept and act upon this value, and how this attribute can strengthen young women as they prepare to be worthy to make and keep sacred covenants and receive temple ordinances.

We will distribute through local priesthood leaders and also post online the Personal Progress value experiences and projects associated with this value. We desire all young women to complete and be recognized for completing this value, in addition to the seven values listed in the Personal Progress book. You may want to study the following scriptural references as you contemplate a return to virtue.

“I believe one virtuous young woman led by the Spirit can change the world.”

There have been many LDS Young Women groups who have declared loudly that they are Returning to Virtue and they will Remember Virtue.

In a world that has seemingly forgotten virtue all together,  the LDS Youth Theme for 2010 has been “Be Strong and of a Good Courage”  In order to stay virtuous, we need to be strong and of a good courage.  It takes a great deal of courage in today’s world to hold fast to values like virtue.  It is something that’s needed in this day and age more than ever before.  There is a reason Elaine Dalton declared in LDS General Conference October of 2008:

“I testify that a return to virtue is possible because of the Savior’s example and the “infinite virtue of His great atoning sacrifice. I testify that we will be enabled and strengthened not only to do hard things but to do all things.”

Area Rugs for Every Personality

We’ve all heard about designing with character: when you’re decorating your own space, it’s important to make it reflect your personal taste instead of some professional designer’s. But many homeowners have trouble implementing this simple rule. Often, their homes are nice to look at but don’t really feel like their own. One way to solve this is to buy rugs online, where you can find pretty much and color, style and design. With the range of options on the shelf, you’re sure to find one that suits your taste, and perhaps more importantly, fits into your budget.

The main advantage of area rugs is that they’re very versatile. Besides the variety of choices, there’s also a dozen ways to arrange and position them around the home. And in the fast-changing world of modern design, that can come in quite handy. Instead of redecorating whenever your moods change, you can simply lay out a new rug and change your home’s look and feel.

Start by choosing a piece that appeals to you personally. Here are some of the most common area rug styles and what they can say about you.

Classy and elegant

These rugs exude luxury and fine taste reminiscent of classic Victorian homes. But instead of the plush carpets of older times, today’s picture of elegance comes in a more practical package. A good example is the Anji Mountain Bamboo Rug Co. Villager Collection, a collection known for its simple yet eye-catching designs. The smooth bamboo finish fits in perfectly with the sleek feel of classic homes, and the vibrant colors are sure to add lots of personality.

Wool is a more expensive option, but the quality is often more than worth it. It offers a soft, luxurious feel that instantly warms up a home, and a lasting quality that ensures years of regular use. Wool rugs make a great choice for living rooms and bedrooms, where their natural texture can be best appreciated. And since they come in a wide range of designs, there’s sure to be a wool rug that suits your home.

Sweet and feminine

If you’re decorating a girl’s room or nursery, or simply want a feminine look for your home, these rugs are definitely your best bet. The soft hues, gentle curves, and luscious textures of these rugs make them the perfect treat for girls who love to indulge in life’s little luxuries. And if you think it’s all about pinks and yellows, think again—these days, you can find heart shaped area rugs, floral designs, and a range of sweet pastel shades that set the mood for a relaxing room.

Girls’ rugs are often the room’s focal point, so make sure it goes well with everything else in the room. Otherwise, it will clash with your décor and simply look forced and tacky. Choose one that matches the pattern of your curtains, the color of your sheets, or the trimmings on your furniture. Think of it as a finishing touch: it should tie together all the elements around it and create a clipped look like the ones you see in magazines.

Edgy and modern

Area rugs are more popular in contemporary décor than any other design movement. That’s why many of the rugs you see today feature the bold prints and stark colors associated with modern homes. Perhaps the most common are geometric area rugs—rugs featuring structured patterns that simply pop out of the picture. Often boasting bright, look-at-me colors, these rugs are perfect for those who like to think out of the box and try new ideas.

Modern materials also play a big role in contemporary rug design. Today’s designers aren’t afraid to weave new materials into their products, and often with very good results. Natural materials like bamboo, sisal, jute and seagrass are some of the most popular. This also fits in well with "green" décor themes that favor sustainable materials with little to no environmental impact. Make sure to pick one with the right protective treatments, as natural fibers tend to be more brittle than synthetic.

Cute and quirky

Unleash your inner child and add a whimsical touch to your home with these unique rug designs. Most people associate these rugs with children’s rooms, but while they do work well for kids, there’s no reason you can’t use them elsewhere in the home. For example, animal area rugs have a personality of their own and never fail to perk up a home. Some are even animal-shaped—definitely a great way to break out of the mold!

These rugs often come in bright colors, so make sure the rest of the room can accommodate it. If you already have a bright color scheme, you may want to go for a simpler rug design. Try using animal prints—they’re a classic design that never goes out of style, but always make a great conversational piece.

Complete Your Decor With Braided Rugs

Area rugs have made a huge comeback in recent years as a staple for modern design. Once considered purely ornamental and even impractical, they are now one of the most valued yet affordable pieces of home décor. In fact, it’s not just about being modern—area rugs now fit into any décor theme, from country and traditional to contemporary chic. And easily one of the most versatile styles to enter the market is the braided rug.

Braided area rugs were once associated with the country look, but we’ve gone a long way since then. Manufacturers have managed to make braided rugs that fit just about any theme. The unique construction method allows them to use various colors and color combinations, and even a few interesting patterns. With all the choices available, you can even spend all day choosing just one braided rug! To help you find the right piece, here are some things you should consider when buying braided rugs for your home.

Color

Braided rugs tend to have bright, eye-catching colors, which makes them ideal as centerpieces or focal points. But you also have to make sure it goes with your existing décor. One of the easiest ways to do that is by matching the dominant colors in your room. If you have a lot of blue around the room, a blue braided rug can help tie it together and give the room a smooth, unified look.

If you want to play it safe, you can go for neutral colors like white, black or gray. Gray has been touted this year’s "in" color by many designers, so it should be easy to find the right piece. The Rhody Rugs Blossom Moonstone Rug, for example, combines gray with bright pastels for a soft, relaxing look. It works great indoors as a room accent, or even outdoors in your porch or deck.

Pattern

While you can find braided rugs in solid colors, most of them will have at least some variation. The techniques used to weave them together require several separate threads, so most manufacturers get creative and work various colors in one piece. Generally, patterned rugs work best if your room mostly consists of solid colors. This helps the colors stand out better and adds a sense of movement to the room, making it more visually interesting.

Some braided rugs also come with a central pattern featuring images such as flowers, words, or geometric shapes. This style is ideal for large spaces where the floor is mostly bare, as it breaks up the monotony of the room. A good example is the Rhody Rugs Williamsburg Rug, which features a central design of flowers and a braided border with monochromatic blues. Use it to brighten up a rustic country home, or to finish off a traditional American colonial look.

Materials

Pretty much any material can be made into a braided rug, but the most common are wool, cotton, and polypropylene (a synthetic, plastic-based fiber). Your choice of rug material should depend on your lifestyle and how you plan on using the rug. If you have kids or pets, your floors probably get more abuse, so you may want a synthetic rug that can stand up to it. If it’s for a low-traffic area like your bedroom, you can probably go for a softer fiber like cotton.

The material you choose can also affect how your braided rug will hold its shape. Because of their unique construction, braided rugs tend to fray or roll up at the edges. Choose a rug that uses heavy fibers so they always fall flat on the floor. The Rhody Rugs Rio Almond Rug, for example, uses a special nylon filament that surpasses most industry standards, so you can be sure it’s look like new for years. This makes it ideal even for busy areas like the kitchen, as it holds up well to humidity, moisture, and constant foot traffic.

Shape and size

Most braided rugs on the market are oval-shaped. This is because they start out as single rectangular strips, with the braids going around them and eventually forming an oval shape. But modern manufacturing has allowed a wider range of techniques, and you can now find braided rugs in square, rectangular, and even circular designs. Less-common shapes add interest to the room and create a nice contrast against the usually straight walls.

Size is also an important consideration, although few people realize it. When you buy area rugs, you immediately think of the colors, patterns, and other visual details. But often, these designs don’t play out too well—they’re either too big or too small for the designs to get noticed. Choose a rug that leaves some floor space around it and is proportional with the room itself. For large rooms, you may want to get two smaller rugs instead of one big one so you can spread out the design.
