LDS Women Need Heros Too

There have been many pieces of artwork produced for the LDS Market depicting great men of valor and strength.  One of my favorite subjects is that of the 2000 Stripling Warriors.  Many artists have depicted them and their images have favored many bedroom walls.  A very popular rendition showed three very strong looking men with the captions reading "Stripling Warriors, Mommas Boys".  Young boys have looked to the image of the Stripling Warriors as idea of a young man who stays true and strong when everything around him seems to attack who he is and what he stands for.  Recently, a whole selection of posters has been produced to depict the Stripling Warriors and other heroes.  These other heroes are meant to inspire more than just young men.  The list of subjects include, Nephi, Enos, Samuel the Lamanite, Ammon, Lehi, Abinadi, Captain Moroni, Moroni son of Mormon, The brother of Jared and Stripling Warriors.  This time though added to them are a few women.  The Daughters of Ishmael in the Wilderness being strong through their afflictions.

Ruth of the Old Testiment who stood beside her mother-in-law and Queen Esther who risked her life to save her people,Mary mother of the Savior,Hannah who promised to Lord to give her son to the service of the Lord if she could but have one, Emma Smith walking with her children across the frozen ground, the mother’s of the 2000 Stripling Warriors and a young woman standing with the 2010 Young Women’s Theme.  These eight posters depict these great women of faith and example to all who look.

As an LDS woman, I need role models sometimes that are gender specific.  I know the greatest work on this world I will ever do is the teaching of my children.  I look at Mary, Hannah and the mother’s of the 200 Stripling Warriors for inspiration.  They were just women like me who wanted their children to understand the truth and to know God.  As hard things are asked of me I look to Ruth, Emma Smith, The daughters of Ishmael in the wilderness and Queen Esther.

As I look at the poster of the young girl, I am reminded of my daughters and the example they are to me.  The words beneath the picture are just what they would say to me when I would get discouraged.

"Be Strong and of a Good Courage".  I believe that’s what all of these heroes would say to us.

LDS Temple Artwork

LDS Temples are considered to be the most sacred buildings on the face of the earth by the faithful.  Inside these beautiful buildings families are sealed for eternity.  So they come to represent the eternal nature of love and of the family.  When LDS people come into their temples to make promises of faithful living and receive the blessings of eternal family,  death of loved ones ceases to be the devastating loss it once was.  Because of the Mormon Temple, nothing is lost.  For those of us who have lost a loved one, there can be no greater promise.  So it is no wonder that the image of these lovely buildings are found sculpted, painted, drawn and photographed.

LDS artists have been trying to capture the beauty of the temple since the first one in Kirtland was dedicated in the 1800s.  Since then over one hundred and fifty temples have been built.  Each one has been photographed and painted by numerous members of the church.  Many copies are hanging on the walls of faithful members of the church worldwide.

President Spencer W. Kimball recalled the story of a mother who was saddened because her three sons had left home and gone to sea instead of preparing for further schooling and missions for the Church. You have taught them well." (See Ensign, Dec. 1972, p. 46.) President Kimball then went on to suggest that if parents want their children to marry in the temple, they would do well to hang a picture of the temple in a prominent place in their homes.

As you walk through the rooms of your home, do you see uplifting images which include appropriate pictures of the temple and the Savior? Doing such begins the construction of a "spiritual mansion" in which we all may reside regardless of our worldly circumstance—a home filled with treasure that "neither moth nor rust doth corrupt."10 There exists a righteous unity between the temple and the home.

When members of the church were called to leave Nauvoo.  As they walked down Parley Street to cross the Mississippi River they could turn and see the beautiful Nauvoo Temple behind them.  It was the promises they received inside that temple that made their hardships bearable.

I am so grateful for those who have dedicated their time and talent to create such beautiful pictures and art.  It brings a spirit into our home that nothing else can.

Celtic Jewelry for Girls

Starting at a young age, girls love to dress up, express themselves, and feel beautiful. From princess tutus to ornate pendants, women develop their own personal style while enjoying the fashion of the moment. When looking for the perfect gift for that special girl, consider giving Celtic jewelry. There are varying styles in Celtic jewelry. In terms of metals, you can find Celtic jewelry made with everything from sterling silver to platinum. Depending on your budget, Celtic jewelry can range from simple claddagh rings to ornate tara brooches and diamond earrings. If the girl is a teenager, she may already wear jewelry, and that will give an excellent clue regarding the styles she most enjoys. Before purchasing earrings, check to see if the girl has her ears pierced. If she tends to lose things, a necklace that clasps around the neck is an ideal choice. Birthstones are a very popular accent to jewelry and personalize the piece. Pieces that can be complemented with future gifts to complete a set are also a popular gift idea.

A Celtic cross pendant is a beautiful gift that can be given for religious events like Confirmations and Communions, but also makes an excellent present for birthdays and other holidays. A pendant can be worn on different chains to product different looks. Celtic cross pendants have exquisite detail, and can be personalized with birthstones or other semiprecious stones.

For an elegant, less religious look, a Celtic knot pendant is a unique gift. A Celtic knot, such as the Trinity knot, has varying meanings that can relate to any particular event or moment in a girl’s life. A symbol of Irish heritage, friendship, and eternity, a Celtic knot is a beautiful interwoven strand that engages the admirer while providing a unique artistic design to an everyday outfit.

Celtic bracelets are another excellent choice. Charm bracelets allow girls to collect different beads, and providing the basic bracelet with a few beads will allow for you to give beads as future presents. Silver bracelets are excellent choices and can be maintained very easily. For young girls, look for bracelets that can be clasped, rather than bracelets that slip onto the hand.

Celtic jewelry are timeless pieces that will provide a beautiful and meaningful accent to any girl’s wardrobe. With the growth of cultural jewelry within today’s fashion, Celtic and Irish jewelry is a popular gift. Giving affordable but beautiful jewelry will not only teach proper maintenance, but will also provide that special girl with a unique piece that will grow with her.

Gift Ideas for Your Bridesmaids

Choosing which of your friends to include in your Wedding party is an important decision. These women will be helping you with your wedding planning, hosting your shower and bachelorette party, and will be there to ensure you enjoy your special day. To thank your Bridesmaids for their endless help and friendship, it is customary to present them with a gift that represents your appreciation and their unique personalities. Choosing what gifts to present depends on many components. Personality, budget, style, and taste are all factors to consider. Gifts such as picture frames, Claddagh rings, or gift certificate are excellent examples of how diverse the choices are for bridesmaid presents.

There are many approaches to choosing the perfect gift for your bridesmaids. First, you must consider your budget. Some brides will spend hundreds of dollars of gifts, while others will make something inexpensive yet personalized for each bridesmaid. There are affordable choices for all budgets, and as long as you take the time to consider the Bridesmaids and the gift’s usefulness, the present will be appreciated.

You may also want to correspond the gifts with the theme of the wedding. Depending on the theme of the wedding, gifts can be personalized. If it is a beach themed wedding, monogramed beach bags or towels will make a cute and useful gift. For winter weddings, silk scarves or leather gloves they can wear while traveling from the ceremony to the reception will add a touch of class and warmth. Jars of homemade preserves or maple syrup for Spring or Fall weddings can provide a cost efficient choice.

Jewelry is a timeless gift that can be worn for years after, and will also remind the bridesmaid of the wedding each she wears it. Religious jewelry, like Celtic cross pendants, can be worn during the ceremony, and can be either uniform or different for each bridesmaid. Gold, sterling silver, or silver can be chosen to match the jewelry of the bride. Stones can be chosen to match their dresses.

Finally, gifts that can be used to treat themselves. Gift certificates or ones that can allow them a sense of relaxation before the wedding are excellent choices. Hair salons, spas, or nail salons near the wedding location will give the party a chance to relax before the ceremony.

Many brides choose to give individualized presents that represent her special relationship with each bridesmaid. Presents like photo albums, handmade scarves, or a magazine subscription can be tailored to her interests. A Celtic charm bracelet can be personalized for each bridesmaid to include her personal style with charms, spacers, and birthstones.

Your bridesmaids are an integral part of your wedding and will provide much comfort, strength, and support during the whole planning process. Depending on your theme, budget, or personal preference, taking the time to choose the perfect present will truly make your bridesmaids feel appreciated.
