How to pick out that perfect CTR Ring

If you’ve ever wondered what CTR Rings were all about or what they stood for, or how they got started, this is the history.

The letters CTR, a reference to this phrase “Choose The Right” , are incorporated into a shield logo designed by Helen Alldredge, a Primary General Board member in the 1960s. In 1970, a church committee headed by Naomi W Randall recommended that the shield be incorporated into official church material. Since then, both the phrase and symbol have been used in religious educational materials for LDS youth of Primary age. The symbol is also used in LDS Culture by members of all ages, both as a reminder of the motto, as well as an indicator of religious affiliation. The CTR initials, displayed on the shield and in other forms, can be seen mainly on CTR Rings as well other types of Jewelry, Tee Shirts, Bookmarks and Stationery.

A Ring with the letters “CTR” on is often worn by members of the LDS Church as a reminder of the “Choose the Right” motto, and as a symbol of their religious affiliation.

CTR rings were introduced at the same time as the CTR shield in 1970 by Primary general president LaVerne W. Parmley after being recommended by a committee chaired by Naomi W. Randall. In connection with the children’s Sunday School program, each LDS child in this age group is given an adjustable ring with a green escutcheon bearing the letters “CTR” in silver.

Over the years CTR rings have become popular with both children and adults in the LDS Church. They are now available in a variety of designs in over 30 languages.

When I was eight years old, I received my first CTR Ring. Right now I’m looking for another CTR Ring to wear all the time. I’m finding there are now so many styles to choose from. My oldest daughter loves the baguette CTR Ring and my second oldest daughter loves the Butterfly CTR Band. Both rings are feminine and eligant but so different, just like my daughters. Caring For Your Celtic Engagement Ring

Engagement rings are one of two pieces of jewelry that are pivotal in any woman’s life. Celtic engagement rings wear better than many other styles, but they still need looking after if they are to last a lifetime.

Gemstones can become dull over time, metal can fatigue and the intricate design can collect dirt and grime. A few simple steps can preserve Celtic engagement rings, and other metal jewelry for a lifetime.

Gemstones need particular attention as they can be susceptible to things like temperature changes, chemicals, dirt and other hazards we subject our hands to on a regular basis. It pays to remove the rings if you’re going to be doing anything heavy or that involves chemicals or paint. Prevention is better than the cure any day.

Check the stone setting regularly and avoid ultrasonic cleaning at all costs. Ultrasonic cleaning is fine for metals, but can cause problems with jewels. Stones such as diamonds, while hardy, can suffer with exposure to chemicals, so check them regularly. We tend to wear our Celtic engagement rings all day, every day, so spend a moment or two a week to make sure they are okay.

For rings with knotwork or thicker rings with indented designs, a toothbrush is the perfect tool to keep them clean. Add a bit of washing liquid to some water and dip the head of the toothbrush in it. Apply the brush gently to the surface of the ring and work away the dirt.

Washing-up liquid is designed to dissolve grease and grime gently so it’s ideal for using on Celtic engagement rings. The combination of mild detergent and gentle application ensures the ring gets cleaned without suffering any damage. The bristles can work their way through the design like no other tool, which makes it ideal.

If you don’t have a toothbrush lying around, you could try the cold water bath method. This is simply a bowl of cold water, with a small amount of washing-up liquid in it. Dissolve the liquid, then put the jewelry into the bowl for a few minutes. Take the item out, tap it into the palm of your hand then place back in the bowl. Leave for a further few minutes, then remove and allow to dry on a tissue.

The detergent will dissolve much of the dirt and grease as it would if you used a toothbrush. Tapping it against the palm of your hand is to dislodge any stuck dirt which will be removed on the second dip.

Alternatively there are jewelry cleaners that will do much the same thing. As long as the cleaner matches the metal type and gemstone of your Celtic engagement ring, you should be fine. Just take the jewelry off and follow the instructions on the cleaner.

Celtic engagement rings are made to last. Taking a few minutes on a regular basis to clean it will make sure it looks as good as it did when the jeweler made it.

To the Rescue- The Biography of Thomas S. Monson

President Thomas S. Monson, called as a bishop at age twenty-two and an Apostle at the age of thirty-six, has spent his entire life serving and leading others. 2011 Primary Theme Outline for Sharing Time

The 2011 Primary Theme is “I know the Scriptures are true.” This theme will center around teaching the children about the scriptures and helping them to bear witness of their truth. Each month a scripture will center on a precept taught in the scriptures. Scriptrues selected come from the Bible, The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price and Modern Day Scripture. The following is the years outline up until the end of July:

The 2011 Primary Theme will be “I know the scriptures are true.” All year long this theme will be used to build an appreciating for the scriptures. Songs that will be taught will center around this theme in preparation for the Primary Program that us usually given toward the end of the year. These events will be taken care of by the Primary Presidency and the people called to work in that auxillary, but the theme for the primary can also be used by parents in our homes.

Since faith is built upon knowing the word of the Lord, it is important that our children have an understanding of the scriptures and gain a testimony of their truth. It is never to early to start reading to a child from the scriptures and explaining to them what makes the words on the pages so important. It is a perfect opportunity for parents and older siblings to bear their testimonies about the truth of the scriptures. The Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price hold a wealth of knowledge that enrich the lives of our families. It is never to early to share this wealth with our children.

When they are old enough, books can be found with scripture stories in them that can be easily read by children. As soon as a child can read to that level, they should be given the opportunity to read their own scriptures. But, as soon as a child can read out of a real set of scriptures, he or she should be encouraged to do so, even if it’s only five verses a day. The words of Christ will touch them. The examples of the prophets will teach them.

I have a five year old son who wants to grow up to be like Captain Moroni or Nephi. I can think of no better thing for him to accomplish. We as parents need to read and testify to our children of the truths therein. I remember a few of my Primary Teachers and what they taught, but I will never forget my father testifying of his faith in the Savior and his tender feelings toward the Book of Mormon. You are the most effective teacher your children will ever have. Let them know as the 2011 Primary theme suggests…”I know the Scriptures are true.”

LDS Women Need Heros Too

There have been many pieces of artwork produced for the LDS Market depicting great men of valor and strength. One of my favorite subjects is that of the 2000 Stripling Warriors. Many artists have depicted them and their images have favored many bedroom walls. A very popular rendition showed three very strong looking men with the captions reading "Stripling Warriors, Mommas Boys". Young boys have looked to the image of the Stripling Warriors as idea of a young man who stays true and strong when everything around him seems to attack who he is and what he stands for. Recently, a whole selection of posters has been produced to depict the Stripling Warriors and other heroes. These other heroes are meant to inspire more than just young men. The list of subjects include, Nephi, Enos, Samuel the Lamanite, Ammon, Lehi, Abinadi, Captain Moroni, Moroni son of Mormon, The brother of Jared and Stripling Warriors. This time though added to them are a few women. The Daughters of Ishmael in the Wilderness being strong through their afflictions.

Ruth of the Old Testiment who stood beside her mother-in-law and Queen Esther who risked her life to save her people,Mary mother of the Savior,Hannah who promised to Lord to give her son to the service of the Lord if she could but have one, Emma Smith walking with her children across the frozen ground, the mother’s of the 2000 Stripling Warriors and a young woman standing with the 2010 Young Women’s Theme. These eight posters depict these great women of faith and example to all who look.

As an LDS woman, I need role models sometimes that are gender specific. I know the greatest work on this world I will ever do is the teaching of my children. I look at Mary, Hannah and the mother’s of the 200 Stripling Warriors for inspiration. They were just women like me who wanted their children to understand the truth and to know God. As hard things are asked of me I look to Ruth, Emma Smith, The daughters of Ishmael in the wilderness and Queen Esther.

As I look at the poster of the young girl, I am reminded of my daughters and the example they are to me. The words beneath the picture are just what they would say to me when I would get discouraged.

"Be Strong and of a Good Courage". I believe that’s what all of these heroes would say to us.

LDS Temple Artwork

LDS Temples are considered to be the most sacred buildings on the face of the earth by the faithful. Inside these beautiful buildings families are sealed for eternity. So they come to represent the eternal nature of love and of the family. When LDS people come into their temples to make promises of faithful living and receive the blessings of eternal family, death of loved ones ceases to be the devastating loss it once was. Because of the Mormon Temple, nothing is lost. For those of us who have lost a loved one, there can be no greater promise. So it is no wonder that the image of these lovely buildings are found sculpted, painted, drawn and photographed.

LDS artists have been trying to capture the beauty of the temple since the first one in Kirtland was dedicated in the 1800s. Since then over one hundred and fifty temples have been built. Each one has been photographed and painted by numerous members of the church. Many copies are hanging on the walls of faithful members of the church worldwide.

President Spencer W. Kimball recalled the story of a mother who was saddened because her three sons had left home and gone to sea instead of preparing for further schooling and missions for the Church. You have taught them well." (See Ensign, Dec. 1972, p. 46.) President Kimball then went on to suggest that if parents want their children to marry in the temple, they would do well to hang a picture of the temple in a prominent place in their homes.

As you walk through the rooms of your home, do you see uplifting images which include appropriate pictures of the temple and the Savior? Doing such begins the construction of a "spiritual mansion" in which we all may reside regardless of our worldly circumstance—a home filled with treasure that "neither moth nor rust doth corrupt."10 There exists a righteous unity between the temple and the home.

When members of the church were called to leave Nauvoo. As they walked down Parley Street to cross the Mississippi River they could turn and see the beautiful Nauvoo Temple behind them. It was the promises they received inside that temple that made their hardships bearable.

I am so grateful for those who have dedicated their time and talent to create such beautiful pictures and art. It brings a spirit into our home that nothing else can.
